Hagerstown Area Religious Council
The Hagerstown Area Religious Council (HARC) is a coalition of churches and houses of faith in the Hagerstown area of Washington County.
At our December meeting, we will explore what it means to be a “healing community” with San Mar Family and Community Services. Guest speakers from San Mar will be Jerica Washington, LCSW-C, Deputy Executive Director and Director of the Jack E. Barr Center for Well-Being; and Jennifer Lewis, LCSW-C, Director – Treatment Foster Care.
San Mar Family and Community Services, formerly San Mar Children’s Home, operated as an orphanage then a group home for girls for many years. Following a multi-year transition process 2013-2016, all residential programs and the San Mar School closed when the organization’s mission statement changed to “Cultivating hope and well-being in children, families and communities.” The organization committed to becoming child centered, family focused and community engaged and focused on upstream efforts. Their work through Bester Community of Hope, the Jack E. Barr Center for Well-Being, Treatment Foster Care, and their collaborations with many other organizations all based in trauma informed practices has led Washington County in becoming a healing community.
Join us for lunch and fellowship. Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren will provide the meal and share about their faith tradition. Contributions toward the meal can be made via a free-will offering basket. RSVP requested by Friday, December 8 at noon so we can get a count for lunch.

HARC meetings are typically held on the 2nd Tuesday of every month for lunch, except July and August, with an occasional evening meeting. When meeting in-person, the location typically rotates among different houses of faith, giving different congregations and organizations an opportunity to host. Some meetings will be recorded for later viewing, as we are able and the subject allows.
The HARC Interfaith Thanksgiving Service held on Sunday, November 24, was a beautiful event full of unity amid appreciation of our differences. The multi-colored leaves on the bulletin cover illustrated this harmony: "[they] are all alike, yet all different. And they fit perfectly together." You can view the recording on Facebook or it will soon be posted on Benevola UMC's YouTube page. Many thanks to the many participants who made this service amazing, and to Benevola United Methodist Church for hosting this year.
