Welcoming the Wisdom of Autumn: A Labyrinth Walk

November 7, 2021 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

As autumn more fully layers around us, we’ll walk the labyrinth and explore the wisdom the natural world offers us in these liminal times.

About this event

On this day, as we shift from daylight savings time and evening greets us earlier, we sense the change of seasons more sharply. Autumn speaks to us of change. Those last bountiful flowers, goldenrod and aster, give way to seeds for winter birds. Maple and dogwood dim their bright leaves while oak clings to a robe of brown. Critters employ their enegies collecting food, making the most of this abundant mast year of acorns and walnuts. Earth prepares our local landscape for the coming of winter and a time of rest.

Through the ages, this liminal time has marked celebration and commeration. Samhain, a holiday associated with harvesting and preparation for winter in the Celtic tradition continues today for many people. Early Christian tradition reframed these days as All Hallow’ Eve and All Saints’ Day. As we recall the teachings of our own past traditions, we’ll also look to the living world around us to garner wisdom for these days.

Weather permitting we’ll meet at the labyrinth and engage this ancient walking practice to quiet our minds and open our hearts.

We’ll start at 3:00pm – Eastern STANDARD Time – but come a little early to sign in, set up your chair and settle in. After introductions to each other and the theme, we’ll move into 40 minutes of silence where you’ll be invited to walk the labyrinth or wander on your own along the trails through the trees. Of course you may remain seated in silence if you so choose. After the time of silence, we’ll come back together to share before we complete our gathering.

Bring your lawn chair, reusable water bottle, and your journal if you choose. Please wear your masks while coming and going. There is no charge for Church of the Wild; however we will accept donations to pay for the space at Shepherd’s Spring so remember to bring cash if you wish to contribute.
