THERE IS GOOD NEWS!
For the last four years Haven Lutheran Church has sponsored a Block Party where school supplies came with the free food and fun. This year we knew that style of event would not be possible. We consulted schools that serve our neighborhood children — Fountaindale Elemenetary, Northern Middle and Western Heights Middle — to learn what supplies would be needed by the students this fall. Of course, that list changed when schools moved to on-line learning this fall. So we again changed course, asking what school supplies students would need to do their lessons at home.
Knowing many folks did not feel comfortable going to stores to buy school supplies to donate, we asked Haven Lutheran Church members and friends to “sponsor” the supplies for students. We would then use the donations to purchase the needed supplies in bulk. The response was great. In addition, Hagerstown’s Target donated a $100 gift card, Thrivent Financial provided two community service grants totaling $500 and our Hagerstown Staples was VERY generous in pricing and packaging our supply orders. (Special shout out to Staples manager, Mark, for all his extra efforts.)
There may have been bumps and complications, but Haven’s School Supply Outreach team adapted and persevered. With great joy, Haven members Elaine Michael, Ed Distad and Clare Newcomer (not pictured) delivered school supplies to our neighborhood schools on Monday, August 17. We provided the supplies for 72 elementary school children and 48 middle schoolers to begin a new year of learning on line. To this are adding our prayers for the students, parents, teachers and staff, that they have a safe, enriching and smooth first semester.
