There is a growing awareness among caregivers from various disciplines of the need for communities and caregiving institutions to provide welcoming spaces which address the scope, diversity, and complexity of their clients’ faith, cultural, social, psychological, and healthcare needs. The willingness to make space those who are different is not only essential to ensure access to care, but also continuity of care.

This symposium provides caregivers with sensitivity to vulnerable groups while identifying ways of overcoming barriers and challenges to making space for others who are different. This symposium will also provide attendees with critical resources to ensure that their caregiving spaces are open to groups within their communities who may be experiencing health disparities or inequities. During this symposium, participants will become aware of the efforts of Meritus Health and the Spiritual Care department to make space for those who are different within and with strategic partners in the community at large.

The objectives of the symposium are:
1. To learn about key factors to making space for differing clients and patients in order to provide them with holistic care;
2. To navigate effectively the physical and social barriers involved in making space for clients from different faith, cultural, social, backgrounds than yourself;
3. To access essential resources to (re)construct caregiving spaces that welcome community members experiencing heath disparities or inequities;
4. To develop time-tested strategies which address the complex needs of these clients in partnership with caregivers in our community.
