Eight area churches have stepped up to help meet the need for meals at Potomac Towers, almost entirely filling the gap left when Commission on Aging lost funding and had to scale back their efforts.
We are grateful to the following churches for committing to serve meals once per month at Potomac Towers: Bridge of Life, Cumberland Valley Baptist, Full Life Family Ministry, New Life World Ministries, St. Andrew’s United Methodist, and St. John’s Lutheran Church. Thanks to St. John’s Episcopal Church for committing to a quarterly “5th week” meal, thanks to Unitarian Universalist Church of Hagerstown for providing monthly funding to help fill the gap, and thanks to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for providing a large offering to help fund materials to start up the program and provide gap meals. It is a special blessing that each of the churches providing meals is located in the neighborhood surrounding Potomac Towers, making this a wonderful outreach of the South End Faith Network (SEFN).
Commission on Aging (COA) has been serving hot lunches at Potomac Towers 5 days per week to a group of 25-30 residents for several years. For many residents, this may be their only hot meal that day. In November 2018, Hagerstown Housing Authority (HHA), which manages Potomac Towers, learned that COA would need to decrease to three days per week starting in January due to a loss in funding. HHA Director of Resident Services Dianne Rudisill was concerned about the effect on residents of the missed meals and reached out to the faith community for help.
“Thank you for all you have done to orchestrate the Potomac Towers lunch schedule.” said Dianne. “This would not have happened with out your assistance and the generosity of the churches.”
It is truly amazing what our community of faith can do when we work together! We thank God for this opportunity to live out our mission by showing love and hospitality to our neighbors. We also are thankful to Commission on Aging for starting this program and for continuing to serve three days per week.
There is still a need to fill three more meal spots at Potomac Towers: first Tuesdays, second Tuesdays, and 5th Thursdays of the month. If unavailable to serve a hot meal, cold bagged/boxed lunches can be made in advanced and dropped off during the previous day’s meal.
