Mission and Goals

Possible HARC logoThe Hagerstown Area Religious Council serves the Hagerstown area by coordinating the efforts of our partner faith communities and faith-based affiliates to bring and speak truth and grace into our community.

We can do more together than we can do alone.

HARC’s mission is to foster a community-wide vitality that lifts people out of poverty and improves the quality of life for all.  We seek to fulfill this vital mission through the following initiatives:

1. Community Issues “Incubator”

  • Connect  and facilitate collaboration of people of faith with one other and with other community organizations to address specific community issues in which they share passion/concern.

2. Childhood education and well-being

  • Engage the faith community in literacy and early childhood education efforts with a primary focus on expanding Learning Parties and growing the annual book drive.

3. Community Improvement and Civic Action

  • Continue to partner with local officials and provide faith community support for initiatives designed to improve the community such as the Downtown Movement, Main Street Hagerstown, Bester Community of Hope, and Neighborhood First groups, focusing on development of people, strengthening families, and spiritual support.
  • Be a vocal advocate and moral conscience for the City and County to make decisions for the sake of families and a healthy community.

4. Food Resource Coordination

  • Micah’s Backpack—We partner with WCPS, MD Food Bank, and 47 church and organizational sponsors to  provide weekend food for more than 850 hungry elementary school children during the school year.
  • Coordinate a collaboration of food pantries and soup kitchens, maintain a list of food resources, and seek ways to engage clients in the process.

5. Clergy Support and Membership Diversity

  • Foster and encourage activities that connect and support clergy
  • Actively reach out to clergy and congregations not currently involved in HARC, with a special focus on diversity in our membership.
  • Support the efforts of the Interfaith Coalition of Washington County to foster dialogue and understanding among religious groups.
  • Seek to generate geographical cohorts of faith communities
