St. Mark’s Rector celebrates 25 years

Published November 2, 2018

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church celebrates the ministry of the Rev. Anne O. Weatherholt, marking her 25th Anniversary as their Rector. The Rev. Anne O. Weatherholt was called to St. Mark’s in 1993, following 11 years as the Assistant for Christian Education and Parish Development at All Saints’ in Frederick. Prior to that, she was the first woman Chaplain at Hood College, also in Frederick. Weatherholt graduated from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1978, and was ordained as the second woman Priest in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland in 1980 at a ceremony in the Hood College Chapel. She is the 13th Rector of St. Mark’s, a parish that was established in 1849.

During her tenure at St. Mark’s, Weatherholt has helped the parish grow and develop into a community of faith that, according to the core values on the website, “Welcomes seekers…nurtures each member…celebrates the special gifts…of children…and challenges each member to practice faith, build community, share gifts and reach out in love and concern for others.” In 2015, St. Mark’s opened the Fellowship Center, a gathering place for the community, and now shares this space with Unity, a spiritual community.

Weatherholt is known in the community for her work in teaching faith community leaders about Intimate partner violence. She serves on the board at CASA, Inc., on the Parish Nurse Advisory Board, and in the past has served on the Ethics board at the hospital. She was honored by Women at the Table in 2017 for her community service. She is married to the Rev. F. Allan Weatherholt, Rector of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Parish in Hancock, Maryland. The couple, who met in Seminary, has two grown, married sons. Ministry is in the family as their oldest son, Daniel, is married to an Episcopal Priest, who is the sixth priest in five generations in Weatherholt’s family.

Anne says, “I never expected to be a Priest, as women could not be ordained in the Episcopal Church when I was a child. But I always loved the church and felt called to ministry in education, music, and worship. I love what I do, especially when I see the ministry and outreach of members who give so willingly of their time and efforts to show God’s love. If I have been able to support them, even in a small way, then I have done what God would have me do.”
